Save money by growing your own silverbeet or spinach. Silverbeet has a stronger flavour than spinach but it is easier to grow especially in warmer climates.
Plant silverbeet in the fall in warmer regions and in the spring in cooler climates. It can be grown in pots all year round with the plant needing to be replaced once a year. Pick the largest leaves from around the outside leaving the smaller inside leaves to grow. For more information see this Silverbeet Growing Guide.
Garlic is a pantry staple which can be easily grown in your backyard. Plant garlic in the fall then harvest in the spring when the leaves start to die back. The bulbs are then dried then can be braided and hung in the kitchen until needed. See this guide to Planting Garlic or this Garlic Braiding Guide.
